Frequently asked questions
What is TOA?
TOA stands for Toetsing, Ontwikkeling en Advies (testing, development and advice). It is the test platform of Bureau ICE for Dutch vocational schools (mbo). Your school chooses which TOA tests you take: a starting test (nulmeting) at the beginning of your course, progress tests or an exam. There are tests for Dutch, maths, English, German, Spanish and French, and for career and citizenship. You log in with details from your school.
Which TOA test should I practise?
Check your invitation or test overview. It names the subject and level, for example "Rekenen niveau 3", "Nederlands Lezen 1F-2F" or "Engels Lezen A2". If you do not know, practise maths at the level of your course and Dutch reading at 1F and 2F; for mbo level 4 also 3F.
Maths: level 2, 3, 4 or 1F, 2F, 3F?
The TOA maths tests now follow the maths requirements per mbo level: level 2, 3 and 4, with five domains from quantities and units to quantitative information. Older TOA maths tests use the reference levels 1F, 2F and 3F. Our advice: for 1F or 2F start with level 2 and then level 3; for 3F practise level 4. This is our own estimate, not a Bureau ICE mapping.
Can I use a calculator?
According to Bureau ICE you may use an ordinary calculator (not a graphing one) at every TOA maths task, and the TOA reference card with conversion tables. You work in a scratchpad and type the answer in the answer box, with the unit next to it. Practise the same way here: have a calculator ready.
Can you prepare for a TOA test?
Yes. Bureau ICE itself says sample tasks help you get to know the system and the questions. If you know the question forms, your time goes to the tasks and not to the instructions. Note: you cannot pause a TOA test, and you do not see your result in TOA yourself; your teacher does.
Are these the real TOA questions?
No. All tasks are Assessly's own, written in the question forms Bureau ICE describes and shows. The clock, the number of questions and the score are our own practice measure, not a TOA level or grade.
What does this practice not cover?
Listening (with audio), writing, speaking and conversation, spelling and grammar (TOA has not published that question form), German, Spanish and French, the TOA intake test and career and citizenship.
Who uses TOA?
Among others mboRijnland, ROC Midden Nederland, Curio, Lentiz and Summa College use TOA, for starting tests, progress tests, exams or admission without a diploma.
