Saville's best-known ability test is the Swift Analysis Aptitude, and above all it is short: three sections — verbal, numerical and diagrammatic — of about six minutes each, roughly eighteen minutes in total for around twenty-four questions. You are assessed on speed and accuracy at the same time. That makes the preparation different from a long test: there is no time to work out how a question type works along the way.
In such a short test, one item you get stuck on costs you a measurable share of your score. So the strategy is not 'as many correct as possible' but 'never get stuck': read the question, decide within a few seconds whether you see the pattern, and if not, guess and move on. Always practise with the timer on — otherwise you train a pace you will not reach on the day.
You are given a series of diagrams in which operations (operators) are applied, and you have to determine which diagram is missing. Unlike an ordinary figure series, here you must infer the rule yourself from earlier steps and then apply it. Practise this as diagrammatic reasoning, and use matrices as a supplement to train pattern recognition.
Practise the three sections separately with the explanation per item, then finish with the simulations under time pressure. Our practice tests mimic the question format and the time pressure; they are not copies of the real items.
