Environmental movements oppose sustainable, but also high-tech products such as the detergent Ecover. One of its ingredients is manufactured using synthetic biology, a relatively new technique in which scientists redesign cells to give them new properties. At Ecover, an algae has been adapted to make an oil that would have to be extracted from the oil palm without this technique. The tropical rainforests are being cleared on a large scale to create plantations. The use of algae as production machines is therefore good for the environment and biodiversity
