The brain works like a muscle. They become stronger through targeted effort. In her research, Dweck shows that teachers who are convinced of this and also express this conviction to students, motivate these students to make an effort much more than teachers who assume that talent is decisive. The differences in student performance as a result of this different belief of a teacher can amount to more than 40 percent. Students need to understand that focused practice leads to achievement and that disappointments are part of that path. Einstein, Michael Jordan, and Oprah Winfrey would never have gotten to where they are now if they hadn't been taught this.
