The Tarlow District Library has replaced its paper loan cards with a digital system. Borrowers now receive an email reminder three days before an item is due back, and again on the due date itself. Daily late fees have been abolished for children's books; for all other items, a fixed fee of €1 per week now applies. The library introduced the system after a trial at its two smallest branches, where the number of overdue items fell by a quarter over six months. The staff time saved on handling loan cards will go to reading sessions for primary schools.
Borrowers who return an adult novel late are still charged a fee for each day it is overdue.
